The Four-Week Budget

This is the breakdown of the periods for our '13 four-week budget'. With biweekly paychecks and moving away from living paycheck to paycheck, the four-week budget offers us a way of paying bills similar to how we used to pay bills but even simpler, and has a 1 month emergency fund build in. I have to disagree with abandoning your four-week budget simply because you receive bills on a monthly basis as that is socially acceptable way to do it. The one thing that will help you is if you think of having 13 four-week budget periods versus having "May" beginning on Friday, April 23rd and ending on Thursday, May 20th; I would not call your May budget "May"; I would call it your 5th Period or something similar.

With four-week budget/biweekly paychecks, you can have one paycheck take care of a certain set of bills and the other take care of another set of bills; so, for example, you would be paying your mortgage with your second paycheck every period. By doing a four-week budget for one year you will have effectually paid all your bills one month in advance or built yourself a virtual emergency fund.

I have posted a sample 2011 & 2012 four-week budget for people to view how it works. Learn how to budget

The key to a four-week budget is that it is repeatable every year (i.e., 13 periods * 28 days + 1 day = 365 days in a year).
